Dear All:
I am very happy to send this letter to you important meeting. After the Yi Writer's Conference in Meigu, last August, it became clear to me that a new day has dawned for modern Yi literature. I was deeply impressed by the spirit and accomplishments of the participants -- both established writers as well as young people wo will be the future Yi poets, short story writers, and novelists. Today, all ethnic literature gains a new importance as China enters the age of
globalization. It is very important that Yi writers continue to work hard to take their place on the world stage. I would encourage the young Yi writers to continue to draw on the rich lore of Yi culture -- combining experiences of past ages with the realities of the new era. I especially hope that more work will appear in Yi -- and that more work by Yi writers -- wether written in the Han language or Yi language -- be translated and published in ways that allow more and more people on earth to get to know these literatures. In my own experience in teaching Yi literature (modern and traditional) and culture in American universities wen students are exposed to Yi literature and culture more and more people are become interested--though more work needs to be done to promote the study of Yi literature (modern and traditional), culture, and language both in China and abroad. It is by literary works, along with Yi artwork, traditional crafts, fashion shows, festivals, song and dance troupes, rock and roll groups, websites, films, music recordings, tourism, and museum displays that others learn something of the Yi people. So, please keep on writing and publishing works of Yi literature.
